John Keene
As a former member of the Chicago Police Department’s Animal Abuse Control Team I have made more arrests for crimes involving animals than any other Chicago Police officer. During the 3 years I was tasked with investigating these crimes I served approximately 70 search warrants, arrested hundreds of offenders, and recovered thousands of animals.
I have over 12 years total law enforcement experience, including five years as a patrolman/paramedic for the Lansing (IL) Police Department, and two years as an International Police Officer in Kosovo. During my time in Kosovo I was a member of the Close Protection Unit, serving as a bodyguard for International Judges, Prosecutors, and various VIPs.
I have received numerous awards over the years, including a Chicago Police Department Commendation for being involved in a running gun battle on the City’s west side, where I was not only shot at but had to shoot my attacker.
Prior to becoming a police officer I was in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and served in the first Gulf War.
I share this information with the readers of this blog because someone left a comment on one of my posts accusing me of being “hysterical” over the problems of dog fighting and animal abuse. While I have been called many things over the years, that was the first time I’ve ever been called hysterical. I believe throughout my professional life I have always approached issues in a level headed manner.
I am also trying to make the point that I do not back down from a fight.
To me the issue here is simple. Cruelty to animals, including dog fighting, is a crime. Crime can only be addressed by sworn law enforcement personnel. Anything less is unacceptable.
Furthermore, I want it made clear that I limit my criticism of humane organizations to this issue. A particular humane organization may have many other wonderful programs. However, if an organization is including itself in actual investigations, using dog fighting and animal abuse as a fund-raising tool, continuing to confuse the issue as to who should be responsible for enforcing the current laws, or any combination of the above, I will continue to speak out against them.
While I was on the job I truly felt that it was my responsibility to get these violent offenders off the street. I still have that passion, however I am no longer in a position to personally arrest them. However, if I can get the rest of this Nation’s sworn law enforcement officers to take these crimes as seriously as I did the number of animals that will benefit will be many times over the number which I was able to personally help.
